The New Waves Community
The partnership between Habitat and the New Waves United Church of Christ began many years ago when NWUCC had the dream of providing homeownership for people who may not otherwise have the chance. That led to NWUCC raising funds to develop the 14-unit housing development that now includes the New Waves Community House. After NWUCC received a land grant from the Michigan Conference of the United Church of Christ, six lots were donated to Habitat. Habitat began building in November of 2023. The first Habitat New Waves homeowners closed on their affordable mortgages in 2024.
In 2024, Habitat purchased the additional seven lots from NWUCC, with 50% funding from the Leelanau County Land Bank Authority. With the first six homes completed, Habitat is currently building on these additional lots. Seven new Habitat homeowners will close on their mortgages and move into their new homes in 2025 and early 2026.
